Located in the verdant oasis of Marrakech known as Palm Grove, the history of Palais Rhoul & Spa is entwined with that of the historic city it is located in. Dating back nearly a thousand years, Marrakech was founded in 1070 by the Almoravids as the capital of their empire during the 10th-17th centuries.
Throughout its history, Marrakesh enjoyed periods of great richness, interrupted by political struggles, military disarray, famine and plagues. As a result of these events, much of the city needed to be rebuilt in the 19th century. French troops captured the city in 1912 starting a period of French influence that lasted until 1956.
Famous the world over for Riad's, that take their name from the Arabian word for garden, Morocco's architecture is uniquely recognisable. Riad’s are traditional Moroccan houses, normally built with two or more storeys around an Andalusian-style courtyard containing a fountain. They were the stately city homes of the wealthiest citizens such as merchants and courtiers.
Recent investment into this UNESCO certified site have helped revive and restore many of the handcrafts and artisan trades that were being lost. Many of the restored Riads now offer some of the finest examples of restoration as many of the grand palaces date from Marrakech's Saadian period. Palais Rhoul & Spa is one such example.
